Electrician Pay Rates Brisbane 2026: Commercial vs Industrial

Brisbane is the most expensive capital city in Australia to hire an electrician. That is not what most people assume, and it changes how you should budget.

The numbers

SEEK, refreshed 1 September 2026:

  • Brisbane — $100,000 - $120,000
  • National average — $95,000 - $115,000
  • Melbourne — $85,000 - $100,000

Brisbane sits above the national band at both ends. Melbourne's ceiling is Brisbane's floor.

Why Queensland pays more

[Working theory, not established fact.] Queensland's electrical demand is not primarily commercial fit-out. It is resources, energy infrastructure and industrial maintenance, and those sectors compete for the same A-grade-equivalent licence that commercial builders need. When a Gladstone shutdown or a Bowen Basin site is paying, every Brisbane employer is bidding against it.

There is a second effect that shows in the refrigeration data too. Regional Queensland pays well above metro for technical trades - SEEK puts refrigeration mechanics in Gladstone and Central QLD at $120,000 against a national band of $85,000-$105,000. Regional premiums pull metro rates up with them.

Commercial vs industrial: what actually changes

The $20,000 spread inside the Brisbane band is mostly this distinction.

Commercial - fit-outs, retail, offices, base-building maintenance. Predictable hours, metro-based, more competition from other electricians. Sits lower in the band.

Industrial - plants, processing, manufacturing, mining-adjacent maintenance. Higher voltage, more compliance, often shutdown work and after-hours callouts. Sits at the top of the band and above it.

The licence is frequently the same. What differs is the environment, the risk, and the hours.

The mistake employers make is advertising an industrial role at a commercial rate because "it's still an electrician". Picture two Brisbane ads at $102,000: one for weekday commercial maintenance in the CBD, one for a rotating-shift industrial site 40 minutes out with shutdown weekends. Both are "within the Brisbane range". Only one of them is priced correctly.

Check the licence class, not the job title

Queensland has six worker licence classes and they are not interchangeable.

An electrical mechanic licence covers all electrical work - installation, wiring, repair. That is what most commercial and industrial roles need.

An electrical fitter can rewind motors, build switchboards and maintain equipment, but cannot go and install wiring. On an industrial site that distinction matters enormously, and a CV saying "licensed electrician" does not tell you which one you have.

And separately: your business needs its own electrical contractor licence to contract for electrical work. Your electricians' licences do not cover the company.

The full cost

An electrician at $110,000 - mid-band for Brisbane:

  • Base — Amount: $110,000
  • Super guarantee — Rate: 12% · Amount: $13,200
  • Payroll tax (QLD, above threshold) — Rate: 4.75% above $1.3M wages · Amount: ~$5,225
  • Leave loading — Rate: 17.5% on 4 weeks where applicable · Amount: ~$1,481
  • Workers comp — Rate: Industry rate · Amount: Varies

Roughly $129,900 before workers comp and vehicle, on a $110,000 salary.

What to do

Budget from Brisbane, not national. Decide whether the role is commercial or industrial and price it accordingly rather than splitting the difference. Name the licence class in the ad. And check your own contractor licence is current before you quote the work.
