Electrician Salary Sydney

Sydney is the top-paying of the three east coast capitals for general electricians right now, and the gap to Melbourne is wide.

The numbers

SEEK, refreshed 1 October 2026:

  • Electrician, Sydney - $100,000-$120,000
  • Electrician, Brisbane - $95,000-$115,000
  • Electrician, Melbourne - $85,000-$105,000
  • Industrial electrician, Sydney - $115,000-$125,000

Across Australia, SEEK's industry data puts electrician roles in mining, resources and energy at an average of about $131,000, well ahead of construction at about $95,000.

What moves a rate within the band

Sector. Industrial and resources work pays the most. Commercial fit-out and domestic sit lower. The licence is often the same. The site, the risk and the hours are not.

Hours and overtime. Plenty of Sydney ads quote a base hourly rate with overtime on top. A base of $50 an hour looks very different at 50 hours a week than at 38.

Location. Western Sydney's growth, including the new airport and data centre construction, is pulling demand west. A long commute across Sydney is a real cost, and good electricians price it in.

Extra licences. In NSW, holding a qualified supervisor certificate means you can work unsupervised and supervise others. That's worth more than a licence that needs someone else to sign off.

For employers

Budget from Sydney's band, not a national average. If your rate is set at the Melbourne level, you're about $15,000 behind the market before you start.

Look outside NSW, too. Under the East Coast Electricians scheme, licensed electricians from Queensland, Victoria and the ACT can be automatically recognised for electrical wiring work in NSW. That widens your pool without a new licence application.

For electricians

If you're on the low side of the Sydney band, work out why. It might be the sector, the hours or the package. Compare the whole deal, including vehicle, super and overtime.

HJ Recruitment places permanent electricians with employers in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. See the roles we're recruiting for now, or talk to us if you're hiring.
