When Victoria announced new homes would no longer connect to gas, plenty of gasfitters wondered if their trade had a future. On current pay data, Melbourne still values the licence more than Sydney does.
From 1 January 2024, new homes and residential subdivisions needing a planning permit in Victoria connect only to all-electric networks. The ban covers new gas connections, not existing ones.
The state has also offered rebates for swapping gas appliances in existing homes, such as up to $1,000 towards electric hot water and replacing gas heating with reverse-cycle air conditioning.
SEEK, refreshed 1 October 2026:
Melbourne's band sits clearly above Sydney's.
Existing homes. Victoria has a large stock of gas-connected homes. Their appliances still need servicing, repairs and safe disconnection.
Commercial and industrial. Restaurants, hospitals, factories and boilers aren't covered by the new-home ban.
Disconnection and conversion. Every home that goes electric needs its gas made safe. That's licensed gasfitting work.
Compliance and safety. Older appliances need checking. Carbon monoxide safety checks remain important work.
The smartest Melbourne gasfitters are adding to what they can do, not waiting.
Check which classes your BPC registration or licence covers, and whether the role is domestic or commercial. They're different jobs, with different hours and rates.
