Sydney is the most expensive city in the country to live in, and the cheapest of the three east coast capitals to hire a plumber in. That gap matters for employers and plumbers alike.
SEEK, refreshed 1 October 2026:
The bottom of Sydney's band is $20,000 under Brisbane's.
[Working theory, not established fact.] SEEK's bands come from advertised salaries, and Sydney has a large volume of domestic and maintenance plumbing ads, which pull the band down. Commercial, civil and specialist roles sit above it.
What it does mean is that a plumber's licence alone isn't what sets the rate in Sydney. The type of work does.
Supervision rights. In NSW, a plumber holding a qualified supervisor certificate can work unsupervised and sign off their own work. A tradesperson certificate needs someone else to sign off. Employers pay for the first.
More classes. Plumbing, drainage and gasfitting are separate classes in NSW. Each one you add makes you useful on more jobs.
Commercial and civil work. Bigger jobs, bigger crews and more overtime.
Specialist work. Fire protection and mechanical services.
Sydney's lower band doesn't mean plumbers are easy to find. A low advertised rate competes with Brisbane and Melbourne for the same mobile tradespeople, and plumbers can move interstate. Price the role against the work, not just the Sydney average.
If you're a Sydney plumber at the bottom of the band, the fastest lift is usually a qualified supervisor certificate, a new class, or a move into commercial work. Some Sydney plumbers will look at Brisbane, where the band starts at $95,000. Check the licensing rules for each state before you decide.
HJ Recruitment places permanent plumbers with employers in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. See the roles we're recruiting for now, or talk to us if you're hiring.
